Killing Us Softly

This film I thought at first would be something that was not very interesting, though in the end it really did grab my attention. She made a lot of good, and very true points during her film. The impact that advertising has on people is different for everyone, because not every ad will make a person feel the same as another, though it could. For me it depends on what product or what it is that they are trying to sell that has an impact on me. For example: an ad that is directed towards women for some sort of clothing brand that is more expensive than others, such as under armour or north face, is going to make me feel like oh that women is pretty, and she is wearing this brand, maybe if i wear this brand people will think i am pretty. To me this is not what would go through my mind, but it could have gone through many women's minds. I also have noticed, and it was clearly pointed out in the film that women have a much higher standard than the men do. Women are always expected to look or dress, and act a certain way. As for men based on the advertising i have seen, it seems that as long as they have muscle and are not heavy, they are fine, and all brands will look good, they are not expected to act a certain way. Though they may think that in an advertisement with Lebron James or Kobe Bryant that if they by their brands they will look good, and will look good doing whatever they are doing in the pic or commercial. Both of these examples shows what Killborn was saying, that it is ridiculous how the society has such a large difference in what is acceptable for men and what is acceptable for women.

Impatience in America

I see impatience as a problem in this world because it can make people very angry. It can come from so many things that a person could be perfectly fine one minute, and be exploding the next for example: a person is going slow through a school area, which of course is always 25 during school hours( this is during school hours) and a person behind them is in a hurry and tailgating them. So the person in the front realizes this and has 2 options, to continue to go slow poss brake check them, or to speed up and get out of their way. lets say the person is an older person though so they just continue to go slow. Thus leaving the person behind them very impatient because perhaps they will be late to work or are just in a hurry. when they get to a stop sign the impatient person may honk, flip the person off, or just get out of the car and start yelling. Personally i feel that impatience is something that gets many people in a lot of trouble. There are so many ways that its nearly impossible for all of us to not feel impatient at least once in our life. some other types of people being impatient could be: standing in line at a store, waiting to get gas, waiting for someone to arrive, waiting for a call back from someone, stop lights, late for work, Christmas shopping, black Friday, among many other situations that can cause some people to be impatient. A large problem I notice is road rage, possibly the highest on the top of my list for impatience. I am not sure how so many problems could possibly all be fixed, I believe that a person can only fix the problem within them selves, because they are the ones that make them selves that way. Perhaps therapy or some sort of relaxing thing could be done.

Reality Television

Reality television i believe relates to the people because the people who watch it, have something that has happened or do stuff that happens in the show. They feel that they have experienced it so they become interested, which makes them watch it, and watch it more often. The biggest effect i have noticed from people watching reality television is the styles of clothing that people wear. They seem to change what they wear to what they see on television, or try to act or look like the people that they see on television. The reason that i believe reality television is so popular is because it does not just focus the attention to one group that it is trying to draw in, it can relate to many people and have problems or situations that can relate to many people, not just one type of group for example: they do not just pull in one certain type of race, or athletic group, or people who like weird things. There are many different types of archetypes that people see on reality television. The main one i have seen, based on the shows that i watch are a mid twenties groups. People who like to party, there's always one person who thinks that they are in charge of everything and everyone. A person who is always a follower, and girls who are always bitchy. There is always one girl who just ruins the day for everyone continuously. The bitchy one usually leaves the show early, because no one likes them, or gets voted off early. There are many more, but those are the main ones that i see when i watch reality television shows like Jersey Shore or Bad Girls Club, etc.

Religified

Under armor and North Face are brands are things i consider to be religified. The reason for this being that most people really love these two products for two different reasons. Under armor is mainly for the sports people, or people who are athletic, and are active that need cold gear or warm gear. There is also just regular under armor that does not have the warm and cold factor, that people just get to wear under other shirts, pants etc. To most people who really are into athletics under armor is considered top of the line compared to Nike and Adidas. North face is  religified to me because it is like the top brand of casual wear for men and women. They make t-shirts, pants, but to me the most known thing made by North Face to me are their jackets. The main people who have the North Face items are mainly geared to high school and up. North Face does not make many things for younger kids other than jackets. There are many people who follow this trend. These two brands have been religified by so many people wearing them, and liking them because of the way they look, and how warm they are makes people really like the two brands that i have mentioned.

Popular music today

There have been many songs that have come out in this last year that are making references to fighting, and violent types of things. This was also shown in an article that we read, that mentioned the killings of certain rappers, how covers on albums have showed violence. Certain types of rap artists seem to be rapping more and more about gang violence, and violence in general. I feel that this is contributing to more teenage kids thinking they are "gangster" and becoming more associated in groups, and thinking that gangs, and violence are more common, so that in their head makes it a little more okay. I also feel that music such as rap is making men think that it is okay to use women, or have multiple women. So men look up to these artists and do the same as them, and what they are rapping about.

PCKCC Elizabeth: What is a "Manly Man?"

Even though you wrote the top two things down, what do you personally think is the top three things a man should have in order to be considered "manly"? What type of confidence are you talking about in the sentence "without confidence, you wouldn't be able to do anything..."

PCKCCBlogAndrew: Media Makes Us Smarter

when you say that some people may argue it doesn't make us smarter other than what you said, do you think there are other reasons for people thinking this, if so what may they be?

Hip-hop and country

The similarities i see between hip-hop and country are the way both types evolve. Country used to be considered one way, but we no longer consider that what modern day country. The same goes for hip-hop and all other genres of music. They are different in the types of crowds they bring in, and they types of beats of music. The focus of hip-hop and country are also different. They do not sing or rap about the same topics. Country is more about cowboys, pain, love, etc. where as hip hop to me is usually about some sort of unrealistic thing, such as going to jail, beating someone up, etc. They sing about some things that they have never experienced, though i know country is the same in that aspect, i feel that hip-hop is more common with this.

Media making us smarter?

I personally believe that popular culture media is making us smarter. The reason i believe this is that things seem to be getting more technological. With items going this way it requires people to experience change, and learn new ways on doing things. For example many companies are going green, so they have an option of paying online. As for me an example is that my work place has changed the way you get your pay stubs. They have a website that shows you your whole pay stub and everyone that you get with that so that all of them are in the same place and viewable. This way they are no longer having to send them in the mail saving them money and saving trees. By doing the pay stubs on line it requires people to know how to get to the website, meaning they have to learn how to work computers, and with our day and age a computer is something that seems to be making its way up in the world. Beings it's probably going to be something people will need to eventually know( Even my 85 year old grandpa knows how to work a computer). Though technology has many positive effects i believe that it can also have a negative affect. The negative affect that i am talking about is stupider, and meaner. The reason i think it makes people stupid is that people do not get to experience the face to face/ person to person interactions. Thus making people more quiet and shy if they have to do things in a "real" way. When i say "real" i mean that they have to do it in person. Examples of this happening is aim, msn messenger, and other chat like ways. When i think of people becoming mean because of culture media i believe that it is this way because of things like xbox live, where people can talk crap to everyone and anyone. They can be any type person they want to be when they can not actually see the person. This can also lead to bullying.

Media Violence

Different parts of the world/society view the effects of media violence differently than others. In the video it said that most of the violence occurs from boys/men. They are doing the act of violence to other boys/men. Masculinity can be related to this in that some men think that in order to be masculine they need to fight or create some sort of pain upon another male or female. Media violence is known as something that plays apart in every ones life. Parents prefer that their kids do not watch it, it has been taken to higher people, however nothing has been passed that says it will go into effect. The reason of this being that there is so much media violence, on the TV and computer that the government could not block out all of it. The relationship between violence and masculinity is something to watch out for, i feel that the two of these are becoming more common in our society. However violence can come from thousands of things, and only becoming apparent in masculinity. So i am unsure about how i feel with violence and masculinity

Masculinity

I feel that the top two things that were selected as the most important traits for masculinity are how the society views it. That if I personally had to do this on my own it is not what I would look for. I did however write these two down on my sheet, the reason being is that it is something that seems the world views men by. They seem to be the only thing that people go by to judge  what men are really men in our world/society. I feel that we should take in to account other characteristics because i know that they way they view women is not how I would, and I feel that it should be the same for men. That things should be based more on things that are going on the inside and not just things that are on the outside like looks.

Blog Three

I thought that the articles Ten Seconds to Love, Decoding Victoria Secret, and Porn were the most provocative and interesting articles. Ten Seconds to Love grabbed my attention because of the way Chuck Klosterman described Pamela Anderson, and Marilyn Monroe. The way he compared them interested me a lot. while describing the two and how they are so much a like yet different something comes up about the way Marilyn Monroe is considered so much more iconic than Pam could ever be. As well as the way Marilyn had a husband that was famous as well for playing baseball, how this could never work in the 90's when Pam Anderson was the male "fantasy". I feel that the information in this article was something that would be important to know because of the way we view our society. Decoding Victoria Secret was also interesting to me because of the way that it started out being for men. Then how they realized that they could sell more if they changed target of merchandise towards women. This is important because of the way that gender roles play out. The last one that I thought was provocative was the article Porn. I thought that this was interesting because of the way that it shows how easy porn is to get to. I feel that this is important because, I believe that this is something that is going to become an issue as to free porn and buying porn.

Pornography

I believe that the proper role of pornography is to give people the experience to have a sex life. Some people experience sex, but that just is not enough for them. In the American society I believe that the people who watch pornography are mainly people who do not have a sex life, or people that are addicted to having sex. The idea of porn to me is to sell luxury to women, and focusing on what men really are looking for(or wish they had). There are many people who are benefiting and many people who are harmed by this. People or things that benefit from porn are: companies trying to sell things. By that I mean that companies could put an item in the porno and it would make a person feel that they could be more attractive if they used that certain product. If it were a woman's product, it would help because a woman's body helps sell items, they would not put someone who is unattractive in something they want to sell. The Internet is benefiting from porn as well. There are websites that people can now go to, and pay to watch it at their own convience. At the same time however it is also harming the people who made the pornography, because there are many sites on the Internet that people can now go to and watch for free. Thus meaning that the people who produced it, and would get money from it are no longer getting paid from it. A harmful thing for a woman is that if she sees a woman that is attractive and the man wants her and finds her attractive. She bases the ideal part of beauty and being wanted based on how the men/man see(s) her.

Beauty

I think that there have been good arguments made, and ones that were not so good. How people perceive beauty is different for everyone. I feel that the readings have brought up many good points about the way things seem to be in our society. In regards as to our perception of beauty and if it is healthy or not i can see two sides. The first side is that being to skinny and doing things to your body to try to make it better(look better) is not healthy. The second side being that it is the way humans have described the word beauty for sometime, and it is not healthy to be overweight. This is the way that i feel that America views the word society. I do believe that our society focuses on appearance a lot more than most other things in this world that pertain to beauty.
